My name is Trahern Taua Cabatbat. I was born in Hilo, Hawaii. I am the oldest of three. I spent my most of my life competing in some sort of sport. I spent a lot of time playing soccer, football and track in high school. I didn't have much success in high school when it came to my academics, but with the help of athletics it kept me focused on doing what I had to do to be eligible through my high school seasons. Needless to say I always did the bare minimum. After graduating from high school I realized that school was very important and getting an education was key to having a sustainable life. So I decided to go to a junior college to start my educational endeavors and to play football. I learned very quick that being a college athlete would take a lot more effort then it did in high school. I spent a lot of my time trying to balance academics and athletics. After graduating from junior college I then went to Montana where I again played football while trying to get a B.S. in education (Special Ed and Physical Ed). I spent four years there completing my degree. Once I completed my degree I really became lost on where to go or what to do without football. Football had played such a big part in my life and really was the guide to all that I had done. There was a little time where I became confused and lost without the game. I spent some time getting in trouble and losing focus of why I had gone to college. I hit bottom and there I was given a chance with the help of a few of my coaches to get my life together. I started working at the Montana Youth Challenge helping at-risk kids to get their life together through the disciplines of the military. I did that for a while before getting a connection into the education world. Through my college coach I was given an opportunity to coach and teach here in Winnemucca, Nevada. I then began a new chapter in my life taking me back to what I loved the most, football. I am currently a Physical education teacher, football coach, and athletic condition coach for the high school.
Here in Winnemucca I met my wife who shares the same passions that I do. She is also an educator and basketball coach. We have 2 boys; Txendoa who is 3 and Kea who will be 9 months in February. I really believe keeping my kids active and involved with being a part of athletics and around athletics will help them as they grow. I hope that through athletics and our parenting we can create a positive influence for our kids that will help them mature and grow up to be great kids.
All that I have learned through education, athletics and life I try to pass on to my students, athletes and kids. I think that I have a lot to offer and truly believe that I can contribute to the growth of our youth. I love what I do and I would not trade any of it. I am currently trying to better myself with the knowledge that I hope to gain from this Masters program through Fresno Pacific University, so that I can continue to grow and model to my students that you can never stop learning and never stop improving as an individual. Old dogs can learn new tricks you just got to want it.
